How memory foam mattresses ease back pain
Back pain is a major problem in modern society and many people think that a very firm mattress is the best solution to sleeping with back pain. However a study in the prestigious Lancet journal of medicine showed that this is not necessarily so. In the study, 313 individuals with moderate back pain slept on either a firm or medium mattress. After 90 days it was the participants on the medium mattresses who had less pain. Both in bed and during the day.
So buying a firm or "orthapedic" spring mattress may not be the right choice for a good nights sleep if you have back pain. Even if you don't have back pain, it's worth making sure you get the best mattress to help you avoid it starting. To understand how a memory foam mattress can help let's consider how they are built. Memory foam is a truly space age (it was actually invented for NASA) polyurethane which is sensitive to pressure and temperature.
It reacts by changing shape and molding itself to anyone lying on it. The memory part comes into play after the person rises from the bed. Once the weight is removed, the mattress will go back to its original shape as if it had never been slept on. Thanks to this unique ability to match your body shape, memory foam puts considerably less pressure on your body (joints) than conventional spring mattresses. By conforming to each individual contour of a sleeper, foam mattresses provide satisfying support that is even across the body. So the bed feels incredibly comfortable.

A memory foam mattress further helps by encouraging the right orthopaedic alignment for the neck and back (which can be reinforced by the right pillow). For side sleepers, memory foam relieves pressure on the spine by allowing your hips to sink in whilst still providing the necessary support.
Of course memory foam is not a cure for back pain, nor a guarantee that you won't suffer from it. However many people with back pain have found they get a much better night's sleep on a memory foam mattress. And experienced less back pain during the day.
